Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni are two heroes behind India’s greatest win of this decade and probably greatest of all time. Gautam even went on record recently to state that Dhoni is the best captain he has played under. But these points dont excite masses. Interest always arises when there is a controversy even if controversy doesnt exist at all.
Fans of both these stars, specifically Gautam Gambhir’s, think that its the former Indian captain who eluded Gambhir his fair chances at the highest level.
However during last 2 IPL seasons and as well as in domestic level, Gautam Gambhir’s field placements against MS Dhoni right at the start of his innings have fuelled some flames. Tonight’s match between RPS and KKR was no different.
Dhoni came in to crease at the fall of Ajinkya Rahane’s wicket to Sunil Narine in 14th over only to be greeted by a traditional slip, a leg slip and skipper himself standing right at the face of Dhoni at short cover. With only 6 overs left, doubt any other captain would have taken such a gutsy/risky decision against Dhoni.
However Dhoni, this time, was in no mood to let spinners settle and hit his way out to 8 ball 22, all scored against spinners. It was a move which did not return it’s investment.
18th over when Umesh Yadav was expected, Gambhir again surprised by continuing with spinner Kuldeep Yadav. A move higher in risk order that paid rich dividends as he was able to scalp Dhoni out stumped by firing a perfect googly.
14th-18th overs made highlight of the 1st innings. It was nothing but overall good cricket with Dhoni hitting his way out, eventually falling to Gautam’s brave tactics. Hopefully fans take it the way it is!
