Celebrities largely reside in a male-dominated industry. There are only a few women who have carved a niche for themselves and consolidated their positions in Hindi cinema. One such fearless and brave woman is Anushka Sharma, an actor who has never demurred in exploring and expanding her horizons as a performer.
Debuting in 2008 with ace filmmaker Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Sharma proved she was here to stay. Although, the film’s giant success elevated her to the skies of stardom, the actor in her was tapped by Manish Sharma in the 2010 romantic drama, Band Baaja Baaraat.
In a mere 7 year-career, the actor donned the hat of a producer and opened her own production company, Clean Slate Films, along with her brother, Karnesh Sharma. Her maiden production venture was NH10 in 2015. A thriller bathed in noir and gore, the actor delivered her career-best and displayed a knack for picking up diverse and drastic characters.
It isn’t surprising that the finest of filmmakers vouch for her tenacity and meticulousness. Looking at her worthy repertoire, she has films helmed by Vishal Bharadwaj, Raju Hirani, Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Yash Chopra and Zoya Akhtar.
In 2016, she starred in two diametrically drastic worlds. Sultan, her first release last year, saw the world of wrestling, sacrifice, selflessness and triumph. It’s not easy to be in the same frame as superstar Salman khan, but Sharma held her own and made her character Aarfa a rather memorable and powerful one.
Just three months later, we saw her in the world of glitz, glamour, one-sided love and dolor in Karan Johar’s Ae Dil hai Mushkil.
Alizeh, easily one of her most complexed and complicated characters yet, is my personal favorite. Bringing the right dose of insouciance, heartbreak and anguish, the actor brought a gamut of emotions in her performance and displayed immense maturity on the celluloid.
2017 shall be another milestone in her career. All set to show her second venture as a producer, Phillauri, to the world on the 24th of March, Sharma shall give another evidence of her blazing versatility.
Later this year, she collaborates with Imtiaz Ali in a romantic drama opposite Shahrukh Khan.
All in all, it’s a win win situation for this feisty and nonchalant actor. Hallelujah Anushka.
